ESL Teaching Methods

There is no unique style of teaching English, and over the years numerous popular ways have been formed. Method #1: Direct method All instruction in the target language is done for the direct approach, translations are not permitted in class, and the focus is on the speaking rather than grammar. This makes the direct approach particularly student-centered that has become popular (Kawasaki, 2021) . I think this strategy is a good one since it drives students to study the language they are targeting. For older students, I believe it might be better. If younger kids don't know how to speak the target language, this might be a big battle. I think it's preferable if the students understand their target language slightly. Because this is tightly linked to speech, a teacher should not wish to use technology as an assistant. A teacher can record what the students say on a computer, so they can listen to their words after they speak them.   Method #2: Communicative language teaching (CL

Authentic Learning and ELLs

“Authentic learning comes in many sizes: using authentic materials at the small end of the scale; designing tasks and projects for real purposes and audiences; and going out into the community and conducting SL at the larger end of the scale”   (Zwahlen, 2017). Authentic learning promotes the development of linguistic and academic competency in English language learners via work that allows them to apply language and material in real-world situations. Students are more engaged when they are studying in an authentic setting. Engaged students are more motivated and empowered. Students are far more likely to retain what they have learned when their work has a purpose, is meaningful, and is personally relevant.           Cooking recipes, restaurant menus, newspaper and magazine articles, and blogs are some ideas for teachers. Using comics and biographies by authors with similar cultural origins to ELLs can also assist to foster relationships. Educators can use genuine

Learning by Doing with L2 Students

“There is a general assumption by researchers and educators that learning after performing an action creates better memory of the action, as compared to reading about it, hearing about it, or observing someone else performing it"  (George, 2021).  Task-based language education (TBLT), as a means for learners to practice language via actual life tasks, was created in order to incorporate enactment to the language classroom. Many studies have demonstrated that allowing L2 students to plan before speaking or writing resulted in substantial improvements in fluency and complexity. Planning time will be helpful because otherwise, if a task becomes more complicated, form would no longer be a priority for the L2-speaker and accuracy will be abandoned to focus on meaning. “ There are two types of planning that can be used by the L2 learner, pretask planning and on-line planning.” Pretask planning enables people before they do the task to practice or prepare anything. Online planning is t

Technology Drives Classroom Instruction

Image
There's no denying that technology integration is one of the trendiest buzzwords in education right now. Many teachers are still apprehensive about using technology into their classrooms. This is due to a variety of issues, including a lack of preparation and resources, unfavorable attitudes about technology in general, and a lack of belief in the efficacy of classroom devices. “Simply put, technology integration is just that, the practice of integrating or interweaving technology into teaching and learning" (Woodson, 2021).                    This article discusses 6 Benefits of Technology Integration in English Education. The first is it increases student engagement and motivation. Increasing motivation is extremely important for English language learners. Teachers should be on the lookout for new methods to engage and inspire their students. Second is offering mobility. Teachers may now include technologies in their classes that allow students to access content o
